Healing After Divorce

It takes all the grit you have to turn emotions like anger, fear and sorrow into positive energy to manage your divorce successfully. Divorce is not easy, in fact the majority of the time it is extremely painful. It can take a long time to recover from the damage of divorce. When divorce occurs so many emotions can rise to the surface.  The person being divorced starts questioning their value as a person and as a mate. They start thinking and saying “If only I had done this….” Or “ I should have done this…” or “I am not lovable” or I’ll never be happy” or “I’ll always be alone”.

Divorce can destroy self – esteem, depression can sneak into the mind without knowing what is happening. Understand that all of the feelings and emotions that surface are normal. Accept them instead of denying that they exist. Work through each emotion. Divorce can be a learning experience that makes you stronger and healthier emotionally.  It all depends on your attitude, and how you act after a divorce. Feelings of insecurity, betrayal, low self – esteem and disconnection can linger long after a divorce. You could choose to live and learn from this chapter in your life and create a new beginning. Here are some tips for you to help you heal after your divorce:

  • Give yourself permission to feel your feelings. Deal with the negative feelings. Let them out. You have to feel to heal.

  • Understand that it takes a long time to recover from divorce. Go on your own pace. Don’t feel guilty about mourning your loss.

  • Start taking care of yourself and your needs. Pamper nurture yourself as much as possible.

  • Be aware of how you think and feel when you are stressed. Try to anticipate how you want to react and then do the opposite.

  • Lean on someone. Utilize friends, family, spiritual advisors and if needed a therapist to help you deal with the myriad of feelings that accompany this major change in your life.

  • Dream a little. Start drawing a picture of what you’d like life to look like.

  • Let others help you. There are people who would love to offer support, but they need to have their offer accepted. If you isolate yourself, it becomes almost impossible for others to offer support. DON’T ISOLATE.

  • Don’t think you are failure. Know that being this way is irrelevant.  Think that you still can pursue your dreams and have a great life.

  • In addition to the above points, here are more ways to take good care of yourself:
    • Eat regular, balanced meals.
    • Exercise daily.
    • Avoid alcohol and other mind-altering chemicals. Clocking your feelings won’t make them go away and will only prolong suffering.
    • You can use divorce or breakup to engage in healing and empowering processes of self-discovery.
    • Learn more about your beliefs, habits and needs.
    • Focus on your friends, children.
    • Help others in need.
    • Do the things you’ve always wanted to do, but didn’t because your partner was not supportive.
The final stage of recovery is so simple yet many never realize its importance. FORGIVE YOURSELF AND FORGIVE YOUR EX – SPOUSE. No one marries with the intention of getting a divorce; however, wise or poor the choice to divorce was – it’s done. Going through a divorce is rough enough. If it haunts you for the rest of your life and prevents you from ever taking a risk again, then not only will you miss out, but someone else will too.
