1972 Miami Dolphins
The 1972 Miami Dolphins always emerge as the favourite choice for the best football team ever. Why? Because they remain the only team to have gone undefeated through an entire NFL season. The reason why most other teams haven’t been able to replicate this feat is because when they come close to doing so, the media jumps all over it and starts creating a lot of hype, which gets to the players’ heads, resulting in a loss which spoils all the hard work put in till then! This feat remains a source of pride for all Miamians, and, in particular, for Dolphins fans!
1985 Chicago Bears
People generally associate the greatest defense line with this team, because they allowed the least points in NFL in 1985 (198). In 11 games, they didn’t allow the opposition to score more than 10 points, which really gives you a good picture of what they must have been like. The offense was equal to their task, scoring 456 total points in the regular season. Though they lost a solitary match that year, their dominance through the regular and post season was beyond belief!
1991 Washington Redskins
The Redskins ruled 1991 under the rule of Joe Gibbs, who lead an ageing side to a 17-2 win, and a title. They scored the most points (485) and conceded the 2nd least number of points (224). 8 of the 16 wins were against playoff teams that had more than 10 wins. Washington kicked the living daylights out of 3 teams in the regular season, including a 45-0 thumping against the Lions. However, quite strangely, this team never gets recognized as one of the greatest teams!
1991 St. Louis Rams
Also known as the ‘Greatest Show on Turf’ because of their prolific scoring, St. Louis cruised through 1991 with a 13-3 record in the regular season and the most points scored in the league (526). Led by the 1999 MVP Kurt Warner, the team had an awesome offense. Marshall Faulk was still at his peak, Isaac Bruce was considered as one of the top receivers, and Torry Holt was starting to realize his potential.
1997 and 1998 Denver Broncos
At one point, it seemed that John Elway would never get the chance to win a Super Bowl title with the Broncos, but it all changed in 1997 when the Broncos returned after a 9-year hiatus. In ’97 and ’98, they made it within the top 2 scoring teams. They beat hot favourites Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII and blasted the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl XXXIII. These victories ensured that John Elway could stamp himself as the best quarterback the game has ever seen! |
