When you think of all the sophisticated gear that can be bought nowadays for the purpose of hunting the same animals as that of the caveman years, the tools our ancestors had used can seem almost funny. That just goes to show how hunting has evolved in time and what a serious sport it has become in recent years. Many types of equipment are used around the world for hunting but in this article, we are talking about legal hunting equipment used in modern day.
Firearms
These will depend on the type of hunting you are pursuing. For instance, you can’t use the same rifle for bear that you use on birds. So we have tried to give a generalist account below.
Archery
For long, compound bows, the pull should be at least 40 pounds. Scopes should not be used but string locks and mechanical string released are permitted. For big animals, like bear and deer, the arrowhead needs to be at least 8 inches wide to be effective. For the crossbow, the pull needs to be about 125 pounds. The arrowheads can be the same width as mentioned above. A crossbow should not be used on elk.
Using poison on the arrowhead for both the bow types mentioned here is a strict no-no.
Muzzleloader
The barrel of the gun should be longer than 18 inches for deer hunting. Muzzleloading handguns can be used if the barrel is over 9 inches long and at least .45 caliber for conical bullets.
Modern Gun
Any type of modern gun is legal for use in deer hunting except for the following:
- buckshot in a .410 shotgun.
- shot smaller than No. 4 buckshot in any shotgun.
- rimfire cartridges, military or full metal jacketed ammunition.
- any centerfire rifle, pistol or revolver smaller than .22 caliber.
- handguns with barrels shorter than 4 inches.
Accessories
Don’t forget to have a sharp sturdy knife. You never know when you may need it. Also, have the necessary gear to field dress your game. For instance a deer harness may come in handy. Keeping a small but efficient toolbox might be a good idea because you can keep all the small tools in one place and quickly find the right tool when you need outdoors.
A reliable compass or GPS device is a must because you can get carried away chasing after animals and then get lost in the wilderness. A binocular will help you to locate targets and also to keep a safe distance from them. A first aid kit will be your friend in case of a hunting emergency.
Dressing for hunting
This is important to consider because hunting involves wandering around in unpredictable conditions and often on tough terrain. Sensible clothes are needed, which include hunting boots and a rough jacket. If you are hunting in heavily snowed up areas, remember to add snowshoes to your gear.
