What Makes Soccer Great

What makes soccer a great team sport

I don’t think I have to tell you much about soccer. Almost every soul has at least watched one soccer match in their lifetime, and it has the most popularity among all countries in the world. However, have you ever thought of what is it that makes soccer a great team sport?

1. Team brilliance overtakes individual brilliance

There are so many instances of teams which have so many great players, but don’t have a very good win/loss ratio. Why is that? Because a team may have star quality players, but if they don’t gel together, the team is bound to fail. How do you think that Spain won the European Championship which concluded recently? There were so many other really good teams like France, Netherlands, Italy, but none of them got to the semi – finals. The secret of Spain’s success was the fact that they gelled together very well. They didn’t have a lot of star quality players, but the team spirit covered up for any individual deficiencies and enabled them to lift the cup!

2. Everyone is involved

Soccer is one of the few sports where you need a very detailed plan in order to succeed at the highest level. It’s a near impossibility for one person to score a goal by himself. The player with the ball must pass it to someone who is strategically positioned better to score a goal. Often, even if players have the chance to score a goal from a long distance, we see them passing it to another player so that the team has a better chance of scoring a goal.

3. Everyone must co-operate

In soccer, for a team plan to work, there should be the full obligation of everyone. Therefore, due priority has to be given in explaining to the players as to how the team  plan is to be executed, thereby making sure that everyone gets involved in the plan.
