Basics of Baseball

Are you interested in trying out a game of baseball, or are you a parent eager to get your child involved in the sport. These are few basics one needs to know about baseball to get the maximum out of the sport.

In short a game of baseball is where, baseball players proceed around bases by batting and running with the aim of scoring. Points which are also called runs are scored by a player on the batting team when he touches all the bases, including the home base, without being tagged or put out by a player of the fielding team. The game is won by the team scoring the most number of runs in the allocated number of innings.

If you are a parent interested in seeing your child become a successful baseball player, remember the key basic. Teach them the basic fundamentals when they are small. This is the most important step you could take towards success. Young players must be taught the proper techniques. There are teaching methods and drills for throwing, catching and hitting. These fundamentals can be learned at a very early age and can be improved on at a later stage if the basic techniques are taught correctly.

For example the basic skills of hand-eye coordination and throwing correctly must be taught and practiced around the age of 5.When the child is 5 – 6 years of age, proper throwing skills can be taught. Use a plastic ball to play with your child. When throwing observe and guide your child to throw with an overhand motion, turn the shoulders vertical to the target and steps with the proper foot (left foot for right handers, etc.). Through repeated practice, they will develop an accurate and strong arm.

By the cage 7 – 9, games should be included into throwing practice to make it more fun and challenging. Use your imagination and create an evening of fun. You could play games like, longest throw, hit the target and count the throws.. Use a soft ball for ages 7 – 8 and a real baseball for children of age 9 years and upwards. It is advantages if the balls are smaller in size thus the children can learn the proper grip. 2 or 3 fingers on top with the thumb directly under the ball.
