Dr. Nicole Williams is a dentist, and has answered some common questions that Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Sealants.
Q. What are dental sealants?
A. A Dental Sealant is a plastic, professionally applied material that is put on the chewing surfaces of teeth to prevent cavities. Typically children have sealants applied, but they are also available for adults of any age.
Q. How do dental sealants work?
A. Sealants provide a physical barrier so that cavity-causing bacteria cannot invade the pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. The surface of a sealant is smoother than a typical tooth, providing fewer grooves for bacteria to invade.
Q. Which teeth are suitable for sealants?
A. Premolars and molars are most suitable for sealants, however any tooth that is at-risk should be considered. Your dentist will make a decision based on your specific condition.
Q. How are sealants applied?
A. Sealants are applied by first polishing the tooth, applying etching gel, and then applying, rinsing and light-curing the sealant material. The entire process takes no more than a couple of minutes per tooth.
Q. Are sealants visible?
A. You have the choice of whether your sealants are visible or clear.
Q. Will sealants make teeth feel different?
A. Your teeth will feel a bit different for the first few days, then will feel as normal from that point forward once the surface settles in. There are no restrictions on eating or drinking once applied.
Q. How long will sealants last?
A. The longevity of sealants can vary, but ones that last 3-5 years are considered a success. Even so, they may last much longer, from childhood into adulthood.
