Raleigh is the capital of the state of North Carolina and the seat of Wake County. Raleigh is known as the City of Oaks for its many oak trees. It is the second most populous city in North Carolina after Charlotte. Often referred to simply as the Triangle, Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill surround Research Triangle Park, a sprawling business complex that covers some 7000 acres and is home to over 140 organizations. Downtown/Old Raleigh is home to historic neighborhoods and buildings such as the Sir Walter Raleigh Hotel built in the early 20th century, the restored City Market, the Fayetteville Street downtown business district, as well as the North Carolina Museum of History.
