Dr. Jeremy L. Hodge is a Dentist and has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Teeth Whitening.
Q. How long do teeth whitening procedures take?
A. When a patient comes in to get their teeth whitened, we start them off with a customized bleach tray that has been formed on a mold of their teeth. They are also given two tubes of bleach which should generally last until their next six month cleaning. The process itself takes about 30 minutes a day, but results are seen within the first few uses. Patients have loved the bleach trays and have experienced quick and desired results because they control how much bleach is used and for how long.
Q. Are there various ways to whiten teeth?
A. Every office probably has their own teeth whitening methods. We’ve chosen to use bleach trays as they offer a speedy result, and allow for patient control to reach the color level they most desire. Our bleach trays are also much more cost-efficient than many advertised bleaching methods and can attain similar, if not better, results.
Q. What are the side effects?
A. The main side effect of getting your teeth whitened is that some people can experience tooth sensitivity. This is pretty common and is easily treated with a toothpaste designed to help relieve that sensitivity, like Sensodyne. Also, if patients aren’t careful with the application, the bleach can be squished above the bleach trays and can cause stinging and even bleaching of the the gum line. This is a temporary sensation and should go away within a few hours. Finally, if you over-use the bleach (for example, bleaching for six hours a day), you might see immediate results, but it will cause an increase in sensitivity and can lead to teeth looking gray.
Q. What causes teeth to become stained and discolored?
A. Unfortunately, many of the foods we eat and the things that we drink can cause our teeth to stain. The main culprits are: tobacco, coffee, many brands of soda, and tea. It’s best to avoid or moderate their use as much as possible.
