| Dr. Robert D. Wilcox is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the doctor has answered some common questions that Bizymoms visitors have about Rhinoplasty.
Q. How old should a candidate be for rhinoplasty surgery?
A. Growth must be completed. Usually 16 - 18 years old is the minimum.
Q. How long do I wear a splint?
A. A splint is worn for 5 - 7 days after surgery.
Q. What about bruising?
A. Bruising is usually gone in 7 - 10 days. Most swelling will be gone in 8 - 12 weeks but it CAN take up to a year to see the final results.
Q. When is it okay to run or lift weights after rhinoplasty surgery?
A. Rhinoplasty surgery surprisingly is not a particularly painful operation, although patients take pain medication the day of surgery and the next day roughly two third are taking prescription pain medicine and by two days after surgery most all patients are on over-the-counter medication such as Motrin and Tylenol. I see patients back for their first visit about a week later, and at that time the outer splint and stitches are removed. In general, I do not use internal packing, so that is not a concern for the patients.
With all operations, I request patients refrain from running, exercising, working out or lifting any heavy objects for the first two weeks. The important thing is that blood pressure not be elevated and risk a late postoperative bleed. This is uncommon in our practice probably because we do reinforce this advice repeatedly.
