Q. What is TMJ?
A. TMJ – refers to Temporo-mandibular joint disorder. Commonly becomes apparent with jaw pain, popping or clicking.
It is actually pain in the joint caused by the disk ( cartilage) moving or being dislodged. Clenching or grinding teeth or an accident (trauma) could create such symptoms.
Q. How do I know if I have TMJ?
A. Individuals also may experience headaches and neck pain. One should seek attention of a dentist to fully diagnose TMJ.
Q. Can pain killers help in treating TMJ syndrome?
A. Pain killers will alleviate the symptoms. However, they will not address the problem.
Q. Who should treat TMD?
A. A dentist may treat the symptoms by various manipulations or appliances.
Q. What should you expect from a TMD doctor?
A. The term TMD doctor is not really true – there is no board specialty in TMD which is approved by The ADA.
Q. What results can I expect from surgery?
A. Surgery would be the last resort prior to more non-invasive modalities such as orthopedic splints, occlusal splints or physical theray.
Q. Is TMJ/TMD covered by insurance?
A. Most insurance companies do not consider TMJ to be a "covered expense."
