An Interview with Dr. Jeffrey S. Poulter on Breast Reduction
Dr. Jeffrey S. Poulter is a plastic surgeon double board certified in General and Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Breast Reduction
Q. What is breast reduction surgery?
A. Breast reduction surgery is a reconstructive procedure almost always covered by insurance to relieve the symptoms of breast enlargement by removing excess breast tissue and skin and repositioning the nipple to a more appropriate location on the front of the reduced breast.
Q. Who is a good candidate for a breast reduction? And what are the benefits of breast reduction surgery?
A. Men and women with excessive breast tissue with symptoms of neck back and shoulder pain with grooving. Other symptoms that can be improved or relieved are; frequent headaches, arm and hand numbness. I have treated large breasted women from 15 to 65 years old. Reduction surgery helps relieve the social embarrassment of having large breasts, allows patients to purchase clothes that fit appropriately and participate in activities of daily living they otherwise couldn’t due to the size and weight of their breasts.
Q. What are the risks involved of breast reduction surgery?
A. We provide each candidate for reduction surgery with informed consent sheets and go over them paragraph by paragraph. The three main concerns of patients include loss of nipple sensation, inability to breast feed after surgery, and the discomfort of the procedure. Each patient has different anatomy that influences their specific risks and that need to be discussed after a thorough consultation and exam.
Q. What does breast reduction surgery involve?
A. The procedure includes removing areas of excess breast tissue, redraping the skin around the new breast mound and elevating the nipple to a more youthful position on the front of the breast mound.
Q. What should one expect after breast reduction surgery?
A. Every ones experience is different as are their expectations. I place the patients in a dressing that stays on until their first post op visit. They will have a drain they empty and a pain pump catheter that provides excellent pain control for the first three days. Activity will be limited for 4-6 weeks and they will need to wear support for the first four weeks continuously.
Q. How much does a breast reduction cost?
A. Almost all of the reductions I perform are covered by insurance so the cost will depend on the patients health care plan deductible and co pay.
