Dr. Tatiana Santiago Herzog is a Dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.
Q. Is implantology a specialty area of dentistry?
A. Implantology has not been made a specialty that is recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA).
Q. Why have dental implants become so popular?
A. An implant is almost like growing a new tooth! It is anchored into the bone permanently just as a natural tooth would be. This protects other teeth from being damaged just to replace one tooth. More importantly, an implant preserves existing bone in that area, something that was not spoken of often in the past. This keeps teeth and gums in nearby areas healthier as well.
Q. How long after a dental implant is placed can it be used to anchor my new teeth?
A. Anchoring a tooth to an implant is also called "loading" the implant. Some implants can be loaded immediately, yet some implants must be left to integrate into the bone anywhere from 4-6 months. The time given before the implant is loaded is based upon quantity and quality of the existing bone as well as other factors.
Q. Do I have to go without my "teeth" while the implants are bonding to my jaw bone?
A. At no point do you ever have to be afraid of going without teeth. A temporary will be made to replace lost teeth.
