Pekin Events Festivals And Attractions
The Marigold Festival is one of the biggest events in Pekin and has been going on since 1972. It was started as a way of honoring Senator Everett Dirksen, one of Pekin’s most loved sons. When Senator Dirksen was in the United States Congress, he attempted to push for the marigold to be the national flower. In support of this move, the community of Pekin started to grow marigolds. Though Dirksen was unsuccessful in his pursuit, Pekin soon came to be known as the Marigold Capital of the World. The Marigold Festival is held on the first weekend after Labor Day in September. |
