Dr.Judith B. Mamah is a Dentist who has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.
Q. What are porcelain veneers?
A. Porcelain veneers are a thin shell of Porcelain that are bonded onto the facial surfaces of the teeth to correct the shape, size and color of the teeth. This is usually a very conservative procedure that leaves most of the tooth structure intact.
Q. How long do dental veneers last?
A. Veneers can last for at least 5 years. I have some patients that had their veneers done in the year 2000 that are still looking great. The type of forces that the veneer are exposed to in the individual mouth can affect their longevity.
Q. Do dental veneers require special care?
A. If a person has nocturnal bruxism, he or she may have to wear occlusal guards at night to protect the veneers.
Regular dental visit is important if one has veneers. It is very important that the gums are kept healthy so as to prevent gum recession. It is good to avoid biting into very hard things with the front teeth if you have veneers. You care for veneers like your teeth. Brush and Floss them.
Q. Are there alternatives to dental veneers?
A. Alternatives to Veneers are;
Orthodontic treatment using braces or Invisalign to correct alignment of
the teeth and whitening if the shape of the teeth are acceptable.
Another alternative is to do direct bonding using composite. This is less
expensive than veneers.
Patients with severe parafunctional habits like grinding may need Porcelain crowns instead of veneers.
Q. Do Veneers look natural?
A. They can look very natural.
Q. Does the veneer protect one’s tooth from decay?
A. The exposed part of the teeth not covered by the veneer can develop decay if a patient does not maintain a good oral hygiene.
Q. How much does veneer cost?
A. The fee for Veneers depends on the dental office and type of veneer. They can be prepless like Lumineers or teeth may reqire some preparation. The average fee starts at $1000.00.
