An Interview with Dr. Bob Stewart on Dentures.

Dr. Bob Stewart is a Dentist  who has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dentures.

Q.    What are dentures?

A.    Removable dental appliances which replace all or some missing teeth.

Q.    Why should I use a denture adhesive?

A.    Ideally, you shouldn’t. Some individuals may have loose dentures due to insufficient bone, a shallow palate, or other reasons. In these cases denture adhesive may be helpful. However, trying to use adhesive in order to wear an old or poorly fitting denture can actually cause harm to the gums, mouth, and jaw joints.

Q.    What types of cosmetic dentures are possible?

A.    Metal free dentures and partials are available. Also, a photo of yourself when you had natural teeth may help your dentist to make you look like you again.

Q.    How long do cosmetic dentures take to make?

A.    I usually like to take some time and allow a trying appointment, so that you can actually see and approve of the cosmetics before your teeth are finalized. This may take 3-4 appointments about a week apart. However, in emergency or rushed cases, dentures can actually be made in 1-2 days.

Q.    What are the alternatives to cosmetic dentures?

A.    Implants are a wonderful, fixed solution to missing teeth. No more taking your teeth out at night, no more denture cream, no more loose fitting appliances, and no more difficulty eating. Implants are in most cases like bionic teeth.

Q.    Are dentures uncomfortable or painful to wear?

A.    Everyone is different. Some individuals are very comfy and happy and love their dentures. So for them, dentures are the right choice. Others just don’t tolerate anything removeable in their mouth, which is when implants are a great option.

Q.    What’s the difference between conventional dentures and immediate dentures?

A.    Immediate dentures are made prior to removing the natural teeth, so that on the day the teeth are removed the replacement teeth (dentures) are immediately inserted. This saves you the patient the embarrassment of going without any teeth while you are waiting for your mouth and gums to heal. With immediate dentures the patient does not go a single day without teeth.
