What is Product Recall?

Product recall is when a company, business or organization has to take back the products which are circulating in the market due to damages or safety issues. The recall of product(s) could be an entire batch or in the worst case scenario, an entire product line output. This type of product recalls could cause devastating effects to the organization.

The cost of recalling a product can and will cause major financial problems, especially if the recall requires a major amount of goods to be returned due to damages or safety issues. Product recalls will cause the balance of an organization to crumble, and will test the organization in many harmful ways. Product recalls can cause other parties to take legal action against the organization at fault. This will especially be true if the recall was due to a safety issue and if there was any threat towards human life. Recalling products will cause great damage to the reputation of the company. If necessary legal action was taken, then the public and the business community will surly know about the situation. Trust and reputation is everything when it comes to maintaining a proper business or organization, once that trust is lost, it will be very difficult to regain it.

When there are faulty products in the market, customer(s) will complain. Once a customer complains about a faulty product an organization will have to check the relevant incident. Just because a customer complains it does not imply that a major product recall is required. The relevant complaint might be an isolated incident. If it is discovered that a product recall is actually required then the organization has to figure out how bad the situation is. The entire batch of precuts need to be tested and other close batches which were manufactured before and after the faulty batch also needs to be tested. Identifying the amount of damage and controlling it is the first and maybe one of the most important steps in product recall. The worst case scenario is when and if an organization realizes that the entire product line is faulty. This could lead to major financial and legal issues, and this is not to mention the stress and pressure it will bring upon the management and workers of the organization.

Normally, when an organization realizes that a product recall is required the organization usually goes public. It is better to control the damage by the organization itself rather than to try and keep it a secret, because when and if the secret gets out, it will be much more difficult to control the damage. Normally organizations take back the faulty products by giving the consumer a full refund or if the incident was just isolated to a certain batch, the organization offers to provide a brand new product of the same line free of charge. The main goal of an organization is to keep their customers happy.

The main cause of product recall is negligence by workers or by the management. Product recall is preventable, provided that all products are put through a thorough testing. Regardless of the obvious, many major organizations have gone through the phase of product recall. Each organization reacts differently and how they react will decide how well the organization will recover from the damage caused. But as the medical community says prevention is always better than a cure!
