How Single Parents Can Overcome Obstacles

Most people do not make an intentional choice to be a single parent. Challenges in life are many to anyone but it is compounded for a single parent. Life is not always what you want it to be but how you handle the challenges will make the difference to your life. One can either swim or sink in it but to overcome the obstacles you need to find inner strength. Situations are unique to all and will differ from one to another depending on the circumstances, personalities of the people involved and available resources. If the situation involves grieving over a loss of the other partner due to death or desertion the challenges are further compounded as they must deal with their emotions as well as the financial aspects. In the end it is what you want to make out of every situation.

A good way to start the process would be to set up a support system of family, friends and church groups who are willing to help you. It could be by way of taking care of the children to enable the parent to go to work or it could be to run errands for you.

Budgeting is a good form of trying to stay out of debt. With limited finances available it is important to make a budget and stick to it. Single parent may only be able to provide the needs and not the wants and however tempting, it is important not to deviate from the budget. Be focused in ones careers and if it means obtaining a college degree then go for it.

Where two people carried out the chores and the responsibilities, it has now reduced to one and it is not  possible for the single parent to handle everything.  Therefore the children should be trained to help with the chores and to take care of their siblings. This will not only help the parent but will also make the children independent.

Make your children understand that you are in authority and that lack of another parent is in no way a deterrent to inculcate discipline in their lives.

Single parents can get worn out physically especially if the children are very young. It is therefore of importance to take care of your health and be fit enough to overcome the physical obstacles that entails.

Have a good relationship with your ex spouse if he/she is living, so that you and your children may avoid unnecessary stress and tension.

A single parent’s life revolves around the children and unless personal time is allocated for the parent where the parent is able to spend time with friends and family sans the children, sooner or later all the responsibilities and the chores will become too overwhelming to bear.

Look for outer strength through spiritual beliefs. It will be surprising to know how many overcome their obstacles clinging on to their faith and looks back and wonders how they ever made it through if not for the unseen hand of guidance. The poem, `Footsteps in the Sand’ will aptly describe this experience.

If obstacles are handled positively children with single parents will grow up to be wonderful human beings and good citizens.
