Steps Involved in Recalling a Product

Products are recalled by the manufacturer due to defects or safety issues. Recalling a product is never a good thing. Recalling is a costly affair and might cause other parties to take legal action against the organization for negligence and for releasing faulty products to the market. The reputation of the organization depends on the quality of the goods that they provide, when products are recalled, the image of the company will directly be placed under a microscope.

Once an organization figures out that a product recall is inevitable, there are several steps that are taken, in order to make sure that the damage done is a minimum. These steps of course can vary depending on the situation and the laws of the area. First the manufacturer notifies the relevant authorities about the products recall. Then all products that might be faulty is traced down and recalled. This will take time, but initiating the search is the important part. All batches that can be defective are checked and recalled. Recalling will take some time, so this step will take place while the other steps are initiated and put into action.

Then the public is notified about the situation through newspapers, television, radio and the internet. Notifying the public of the situation is important due to several reasons. One is that it is better to admit that there are faulty products and show the public that the organization is doing something about it, rather than trying to keep it a secret and then once it is discovered, trying to give explanation as to why the public was not notified. The second reason is, controlling the damage that has already been caused. The third is that when the public is notified, the products that have been sold to the consumer can be tracked down, which will decrease the possibility of any one getting hurt (if applicable) due to the faulty product.

Normally the consumer is requested to return the product for a replacement or a full refund of the purchased price. If any consumer has been hurt or if there is any damage to third party property by the product, then the organization should be willing to compensate on the damages. Finally, if there is any law suites that are prepped up against the organization, the organization should be able to give valid reasons to as why the product was defective.

Recalling products is a costly and messy thing. Many organizations have fallen because of costs of product recalls or due to the rip on the reputation of the organization. It is possible to reduce or zero product recall, but if a recall does happen, how the organization handles the situation might decide the future of the organization.
