Choosing the Proper Clothing for your Newborn

Babies are adorable no matter what they wear. But have you seriously thought about what clothing will suit your baby best? The material and the fit are very important and should not be given second place to the look. If a baby is not dressed properly, it will be very uncomfortable and maybe even develop allergies or other health problems. Diaper rash is one of the common baby health issues.

As you know, a newborn is exposed to a cooler environment, out of the mum’s womb. So, it’s important that he/she be kept warm and away from drafts. The clothing should cover the baby properly.

Any baby wear should be safe. Closely scrutinize the labels to see what the material is. Pure cotton is best-not cotton mixed with other fibers. Cotton is absorbent and will relieve a sweaty baby. Avoid synthetic material that can cause allergies. For sleepwear, try to buy flame retardant clothes. They will be available in baby care shops.

Don’t buy an armful of baby clothes before the baby is born. Many parents are tempted to do just that as soon as they learn of the gender of the baby. Newborns will differ in size and temperament. Some will be very active and some will be docile. When thinking about the size, consider the openings for head, arms and legs. It’s always better to buy a slightly larger size than a small one. At least the little one can grow into it. Remember, the first few months of baby life add several inches.

Avoid buttons, snaps, ribbons and any other frills. They may look pretty but they can be a health hazard. For instance, a button can easily come lose and pop into the baby’s mouth. The baby’s dress should be very simple, so that you can easily put it on and take it off. Otherwise, each diaper change will be a painstaking task.

Another factor that influences the baby wardrobe is the season your baby is expected. If your due date falls in winter, shop accordingly. Don’t buy light wear because by the time it’s spring/summer, your little treasure might have grown too big for them. Again, it’s wise to limit your clothes shopping until after you deliver.

You’ll be getting many baby outfits as gifts. Check the material/fibres in these too. If they don’t meet your expectations, don’t hesitate to discard them. Your baby’s health is much more important.

Sleepers, diapers, gowns, sweaters, booties, bibs, socks, absorbent towels (for burping), caps and undershirts are basically what you need to buy. Undershirts usually come in cotton and are not needed in summer. Don’t put shoes on a baby until he/she reaches the age of walking. Sometimes, shoes can harm bones in the supple foot area.
