Causes for Having to Recall Products

One of the worst things that could happen to a company or an organization is having to recall a batch or an entire line of products, due to defects or safety issues. The amount of harm done by recalling a product can be measured by the product and what type of defect it carries. For an example, if a medical product has terminal or near terminal effects, then the outcome could be catastrophic. If the product was recalled before any harm was done, then the effect might be less catastrophic.

The main reason why a company or organization has to recall a product is called “negligence.” It could be by the workers or the management, but at the end of the day, if there is a reason for recalling product(s), the fault is on the entire organization. The bottom line is that each and every product needs to be up to the required standard. Some times products “go bad” during transportations. This is especially true when it comes to food and medical supplies. Necessary action needs to be taken in order to make sure that the consumer gets a good quality product.

Most of the time, the end product is not sold directly by the manufacturer, but by a second or third party. This does not mean that the manufacturer can sit back and relax and not keep a close eye on their products, out in the market. If there are products which have not been sold for some time, then it’s up to the manufacturer to check the quality of these products. If the products go bad, then it’s the reputation of the manufacturer that will take a hit. This is why in most food, beverages and medical supplies, they have an expiration date mentioned on the cover.

In some products it’s somewhat hard to check for defects until the product is used excessively. Take for example a laptop. It would be very difficult to predict that the battery of the laptop might explode or melt off after several months due to heavy use. This does not imply that the problem was not the fault of the organization. It is always up to the organization to make sure even such incidences does not take place.

Product recalls might happen because of climate changes. Say if a product is manufactured in a somewhat cold country and then is transported for use in a very hot country. The product might not behave in the way it is expected to, due to the change in climate. When these kinds of obstacles are faced, the organization should be able to foresee the event and take necessary action to make sure that the consumer is satisfied.

Whatever might be the reason, most product recalls might have been preventable, provided that the organization kept a closer eye on what was going on. As I mentioned before, negligence is the number one cause of having to recall products. When manufacturing products, the manufacturer should be able to foresee all the problems they will face during and after the product is sold and then take necessary action towards providing a product that will be of the best possible quality.
