Childcare Techniques

Caring for your child can be a challenge to you as a new parent. As parents we tend to hesitate on what techniques are best when it comes to child care. There are some basic rules when it comes to child care, which if followed would give more positive results than you would have been experiencing in the past.

The basic care required for your child is a safe home and community, nutritious meals, regular health check-ups, immunizations and exercise. To be able to give the proper care needed by your child at different stages, one should be aware of the stage in which the child is in his development.

When caring for your child, encourage him/her to express his feelings and as a parent respect his feelings. This will help your child to understand that everyone experiences pain, fear and anger, but one must learn to deal with them positively without getting violent or distressed. You can gain respect and trust by the ways you deal with them. Even when you may not agree on an issue keep communication channels open by not getting violent or loud.

Always listen and understand your child. When conversing try not to stick only to words but also use examples to help them understand. Encourage them to raise questions to clear any doubts and let them know that you are ready to talk on any subject. Always assure them and comfort them. Don’t hide anything from them and always be honest and positive.

Set a good example to your child by your own problem solving and coping skills. If you have trouble controlling your anger or frustration get help to cope with the same.

Spend quality time with your child. Always encourage his talents and accept his limitations. Never push your child because of another person’s expectations. Know your child and always celebrate any accomplishment (small or large) which will help boost your child’s morale and encourage him to do his best.

Your child will be confident of his abilities only if you show your confidence in his abilities. Let him know you believe he can sort out problems and make decisions, and always be ready to give him your ideas on solving the problem.

Set punishments and discipline to the child’s development level. If you have to change a childs behavior or discipline, first take the time to explain why you are doing it, for e.g. explain to him that he is more mature than he was two years ago and thus the disciplinary steps will have to change with it.

The above are few techniques one can follow in child care. Never blame yourself if you feel that you have made an error in the way you care for your child. Remember no one is perfect in anything, and being a parent is a new experience to any new mum.
