| Dr. Daniel Campbell Daube is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Here the doctor has answered some common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Rhinoplasty.
Q. What is a rhinoplasty?
A. The term rhinoplasty is used to describe reshaping the external nose. It may or may not help breathing and, in fact, sometimes it can make breathing worse if not done properly.
Q. What are the benefits of rhinoplasty?
A. The most common benefit is a more aesthetically pleasing nose. However, secondary benefits can be improved breathing or less snoring at night.
Q. What are the risks associated with rhinoplasty?
A. Well, the most common risk in our practice would be under operating. I tend to be a conservative surgeon and try not to make the changes too dramatic unless the patient is absolutely adamant about this. Other risks include infection, skin loss, nasal tip collapse, and obstructive breathing.
Q. What does rhinoplasty procedure involve?
A. Rhinoplasty is generally performed in one to two hours. It involves either heavy IV sedation or general anesthesia. We rarely pack the nose as in the past, but usually we do place a cast on the nose for 5 days afterwards.
Q. How long does it take to recover from a rhinoplasty?
A. The cast usually comes off at day 5 to 7, and I tell people to wait a full year before considering any type of touch-up work as it takes at least a year for all the swelling to come out of the nose. Having said that, however, the nose does look substantially better the moment the cast comes off.
Q. How long can one expect results to last?
A. For rhinoplasty, the answer is a lifetime outside any trauma to the nose.
Q. How does one locate an experienced surgeon in your area?
A. I think probably the best way to learn about the experience of a surgeon in the area is through word of mouth, although this is a mixed blessing. The larger the surgeon’s practice is, the larger the patient population he or she treats; therefore, one will probably get positive and negative feedback. Therefore, one should ask many people for their input rather than just a handful.
