An Interview with Dr. Kevin Pass on Dental Implants
Dr. Kevin Pass is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.
Q. What are dental implants? And what are implants made of?
A. Dental implants are small hollow cylinders made from Titanium that are gently placed beneath the gum to support crowns, bridges or dentures. They can be placed immediately, should someone lose a tooth. They can also be used to support removable dentures if a patient has already lost teeth, giving someone the chance to enjoy their food again. The difference between dentures with implants, and dentures without, are like day and night. Patients with implants can eat anything with absolute confidence. A whole set of top and bottom dentures or bridges can be placed on just 8 implants.
Q. What are the benefits of dental implants? And how long does an implant last?
A. Dental implants are now the most successful medical procedure available, with great predictability. Once they are integrated, provided the patient keeps them clean, they can last a lifetime.
Q. Who is a candidate for implants?
A. They can be used for someone who has lost a front tooth in sporting accident to someone who wants to have their ’own teeth back’. Often even a dentist cannot spot an implant without an X ray! We use implants to restore front teeth in young adults who may have congenitally missing teeth. We use them for 80 year olds who want to enjoy their food again. The applications are amazing and anyone missing a tooth can be a candidate.
Q. How are dental implants placed?
A. To place an implant we use local anesthesia, just like having a filling. It is a very gentle procedure with less discomfort than having a filling. If someone is anxious we use oral sedation to relax the patient. A temporary is used in the area of the missing tooth. The implant is ready to restore permanently 12 weeks later. At this point a couple of short visits enable the dentist to restore the implant and the patient has a new tooth or denture.
Q. How long does it take?
A. An implant is placed in less than one hour though a tiny keyhole in the gum.
Q. How to contact Dr. Pass if we have further questions?
