An Interview with Dr. Michael Pilon on Pediatric Dentistry
Dr. Michael Pilon is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Pediatric Dentistry.
Q. When should parents take their children to have their first checkup?
A. I feel as early as 2 if the child is comfortable in different environments. We do not do anything invasive, we just take a quick look and give them a nice "Prize" for being at the office.
Q. What should be used to clean a baby’s teeth?
A. I tell new parents to start using a finger "cott" which is designed for children, as well small soft children’s brushes are excellent. I still recall brushing my children’s teeth, "Oh here’s another one, oh here’s one etc" J
Q. What is the difference between a pediatric dentist and a family dentist?
A. I refer complex cases to a pediatric dentist as they often use sedation where considerable treatment is required.
Q. What should a parent do if their child has a toothache?
A. See their dentist immediately. Do not worry the child, just say Dr X is going to "count your teeth".
Q. Are thumb sucking and pacifier habits harmful for a child’s teeth?
A. Some people say it is, but it is difficult to break such habits so I just ask parents to perhaps see their MD who can recommend a good psychologist.
Q. How can a mom prevent decay caused by nursing?
A. Most mothers usually only nurse for 6 months, that is the time the first teeth come in. But I have seen young children who have severe decay, they should have their teeth brushed at least once a day especially before bed time.
Q. How often does a child need to see the pediatric dentist?
A. Only if referred for reasons of severe dental problems or due to extreme nervousness. I have had wonderful feedback with my referrals to an Ottawa pedodontist.
Q. How to contact Dr. Pilon if we have further questions?
