Q. What is breast reduction surgery?
A. Breast Reduction Surgery is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of large pendulous breasts that are disproportionate to a woman’s body and can cause physical pain.
Q. Who is a good candidate for a breast reduction?
A. Good candidates are women of relatively normal, stable weight whose breast development is completed.
Q. What are the benefits of breast reduction surgery?
A. To relieve back, neck and shoulder pain. To prevent shoulder discomfort and indentation. To restore normal physical activity which is restricted due to the size and discomfort of large breasts. To prevent skin irritation beneath the breasts.
Q. What are the risks involved of breast reduction surgery?
A. Risks for this surgery include hematoma, blood clots, infection, poor healing as in any surgery. Reduced breast sensation is usually temporary.
Q. What should one expect after breast reduction surgery?
A. Patients normally go home the same day since this is an outpatient surgery. Dressings and bandages will be applied sometimes with small drainage tubes under the skin for a short period of time. Support bra with opening in the front is recommended to be worn during the post-op healing period. Patients usually can return to work after two weeks.
Q. How much does a breast reduction cost?
A. If insurance will not cover this procedure then the patient can expect to pay approximately $7500.00 which includes Surgeon, Hospital, Anesthesia and Pathology.
Q. What type of scarring should I expect?
A. Minimal scarring from vertical incisions at the midpoint of the areola to the underside of the breast. Incisions around the areola blends in with the dark pigment of the nipple and is not very noticeable.
