An Interview with Dr. John E. Russo on Lumineers

Dr. John E. Russo is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Lumineers.

Q. What are Lumineers?

A. Lumineers are Cerinate porcelain which is very strong even when it is thin.

Q. Is the Lumineers procedure painful?

A. In selected cases, very thin (one millimeter thick) laminates of porcelain can be bonded to the teeth that show in the smile with minimal and sometimes no preparation (drilling) to whiten and straighten teeth.  Because there is little tooth preparation, there is much less chance for sensitivity.

Q. Can one get Lumineers instead of braces?

A. Some patients want a brighter and straighter smile but can’t get their teeth white enough with home remedies or don’t want braces that can take months or years to straighten.  Many times these patients can in a matter of weeks have the whiter straighter smile they want using porcelain veneers such as Lumineers.

Q. How long will Lumineers last? Can Lumineers be taken off if I want them removed?

A. Porcelain veneers like Lumineers have shown durability that has exceeded dentists’ expectations with cases that remain beautiful even after 15 or 20 years!  In one case a patient had Lumineer porcelain veneers placed over 20 years ago before tooth whitening was popular and had chosen a natural non-whitened color.  She recently decided to replace the veneers with a more modern whitened shade.  When the first veneers were removed carefully it was as if she never had anything done because there was little or no preparation involved.

Q. How much do Lumineers cost?

A. Lumineers and other types of porcelain veneers typically cost as much or slightly more than porcelain crowns.

Q. What are the benefits of Lumineers?

A. Lumineers have the advantage of removing far less tooth structure than traditional crowns when indicated.  Also, Lumineers and porcelain veneer colors don’t fade, darken, or stain like bonding or natural teeth can.

Q. How to contact Dr. Russo if we have further questions?
