Organic health and beauty products are a thriving multimillion business today. But what does the word “organic” mean? Is there a difference between products labeled “organic” and “made with organic ingredients”? You must know the answers to these questions to be able to choose the right organic product for you.
You have to be aware of the fact that the human skin has the ability to absorb any substance through the skin. Therefore, to gain healthy skin in the long term, it is important to use organic products which will not only benefit your skin but will not harm it either. When choosing the right product, it is important to firstly take a close look at the label and check whether the product has received an “organic” certification from a regulatory body.
To label organic health and beauty products as “organic”, the product should pass a strict set of standards. These standards are specific to every country, though the basic guidelines are the same.
Avoidance of synthetic substances
This includes chemical inputs used for farming such as fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics and food additives. If any extract is taken from an animal, such as goat’s milk, then the animal should also eat only organic food. No hormones should be given to animals to increase its milk production. Even the use of irradiation as well as genetically modified organisms has to be regulated.
Using chemical free farmland
The farmland used to grow the plants should have a record of being chemical free for at least 3 years. In other words, organic health and beauty products have to contain natural ingredients that are grown without using pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fertilizers, hormones and other artificial substances for at least the past three years. These should also exclude any artificial colors and flavors and GMO’s.
Different countries may have different standards when certifying as to what an organic product is. For example, in 2002 the USDA (US Department of Agriculture) brought in a new standard with regard to labeling organic products. Under this standard, the certification of the USDA will be given only to products which contain 70-100% organic ingredients only. These are considered as 100% organic. Products that contain organic ingredients, below 70%, fall under the “made with organic ingredients” category. Another country may see this in a different perspective.
Some of you may not be fully conversant in these terms and may have only a basic knowledge as far as hair and beauty products are concerned. However, if you are concerned about the ingredients of your hair and beauty products being organic, you can always consult an organic hair and beauty expert. They have a vast knowledge about these ingredients and will be able to help you choose you the right product that suits your skin type and particular skin condition. Bottom line is, you need to ensure that what you feed your skin is safe for your health. And you bear a greater proportion of the responsibility in making sure that it is so.
