An Interview with Dr. Peter Bishay on Porcelain Veneers |
|
Dr. Peter Bishay is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.
Q. What are porcelain veneers?
A. Veneers were invented by a California dentist named Charles Pincus .Porcelain veneers are a beautiful way to correct stained, chipped, or crooked teeth. By placing glass-like ceramic porcelain on the surface of teeth, dentists can provide patients with bright, straight, and natural smile.
Q. How long to dental veneers last?
A. Several factors can affect the longevity of veneers, such as: the effectiveness of the bond to the tooth, the patient’s bite, and inappropriate use of one’s teeth. Under ideal circumstances veneers can last a long time, if they’re done right. Porcelain veneers last as long as porcelain crowns or many other restorations.
Q. Do dental veneers require special care?
A. Good oral health practices are all that is needed to keep your veneers looking great. However, avoid common mistakes that will damage your teeth, such as clenching your teeth, biting foreign objects, chewing ice, smoking, and consuming foods and drinks that tend to leave stains.
Q. Are there alternatives to dental veneers?
A.
Lumineers
These are extra tough porcelain veneers that can be made very thin and bonded to the front of the teeth without having to grind on the teeth beforehand. They are made by Den-Mat.
Cerec porcelain veneers
The difference between these and conventional porcelain veneers is that they are made in a Cerec machine, in the dentist’s office. Your teeth are prepared, an optical scan is taken of the prepared teeth, and then a computerized milling machine makes the veneers in the dentist’s office, precisely milled to fit your teeth exactly.
Q. Do veneers look natural?
A. Typically you only "see" the bad veneer cases. It’s always one of my goals to ensure that people think someone was born with perfect teeth.....not store bought . Porcelain veneers are an art....from the dentist side AND the dental ceramists side. Both need to be experts in what they do .
Q. Does the veneer protect one’s tooth from decay?
A. Cavities can still attack veneered teeth. If veneers are placed by an inexperienced or unskilled dentist, there may be ledges, shelves, or other harborages around the edges of the veneers where food can accumulate and bacteria hide from cleanings. In these locations, plaque can build up, and the acid produced by the bacteria can lead to decay around the edges of the veneers. If undetected, these edge cavities can grow and allow bacteria access to the tooth pulp, necessitating a root canal and capping the tooth with a dental crown.
Q. How much does veneer cost?
A. The cost of porcelain veneers depends on the number of teeth being treated. Porcelain veneers generally cost from $700 to $2,000 per tooth. When considering the cost of porcelain veneers, you must take into account their longevity and attractiveness. Porcelain veneers are long lasting alternatives to other treatments that cost less but must be repaired more often and lose their cosmetic appeal more quickly.
Q. How to contact Dr. Bishay if we have further questions?
