Orange Dentist - An Interview with Dr. Frank K. Yorita
Dr. Frank K. Yorita is an orthodontist and has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Orthodontics.
Q. What are the main issues parents face in dental care when kids are going through toddler and childhood?
A. The main issue is tooth decay, due to excessive consumption of sweets including juices and other sweetened drinks. The other issue is an improper bite or malocclusion, which can prevent proper chewing of food and indigestion. Statistically, a large overbite has a 50% chance of anterior tooth damage. Lastly crooked teeth can hinder proper psychological development and create poor self-esteem.
Q. What is surgical orthodontics?
A. Surgical orthodontics is done on patients that are no longer growing and the occlusion of the teeth are severe enough, that surgery of the jaws is necessary to obtain a proper bite. The orthodontist works with a qualified oral surgeon in obtaining bite correction. The oral surgeon does the surgery in the hospital, with at least an overnight stay. Surgical healing usually takes around 8 weeks.
Q. What are the types of braces you provide?
A. The standard type of braces I provide are stainless steel, self-ligating, tieless comfort braces. I also provide cosmetic teeth, colored braces and Invisalign. For children who require early treatment, we provide removable orthopedic appliances and retainers.
Q. What are the benefits of early orthodontic evaluation?
A. The American Association of Orthodontists recommend that children see an orthodontist for their first examination at age 7. Because the young patient’ s bone is more pliable and more growth potential for creation of bone, no extraction of permanent teeth would be necessary and overbite correction can be achieved to prevent " tooth trauma" and help with self-esteem.
Q. What is the best way to replace missing teeth and is an implant the substitute for missing teeth?
A. One of the best ways to replace a missing tooth is to close the space orthodontically, so no bridge or implant is required. If this cannot be done an implant can be placed in the bone and a crown made to replace the missing tooth. An implant is usually better than a fixed bridge, since dental preparation of the adjacent teeth is not required.
Q. How to contact Dr. Yorita if we have further questions?
