Dentist in Orange - An Interview with Dr. Basem Airood

Dr. Basem Airood is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Dental Care.

Q.  What is the proper way to care for one’s teeth?

A. A well-balanced diet gives you healthier gum and stronger teeth. A visit to your dentist twice a year helps to detect tooth decay or gum problems early.  Besides proper brushing techniques, regular flossing and rinsing with mouthwash are also some simple measures that can prevent cavities and gum diseases.

Q.  What is the most common cause of tooth loss?

A. Periodontal Disease

Q.  Since there are many different toothbrushes on the market how will one know which is the right one for him/her?

A. Using the wrong types of toothbrush and improper brushing techniques often cause abrasion. Toothbrushes with soft bristles are considered the best choice.  It is important to find a toothbrush that fits your month and allows you reach all the way to the back of your teeth easily.  It is recommended to replace your toothbrush every 3 months or before the bristles get splayed out.

Q.  Which toothbrush is better regular or electric?

A. There have been some studies done on the effectiveness of regular toothbrushes vs. electric toothbrushes.  In general, the electric toothbrushes are more effective in removing the plaque than the regular ones, since the movements of an electric brush make the brushing easier and more efficient.  Not all the electric toothbrushes are the same, some are proven to be more effective than others if used in the proper way.  There are lots of electric toothbrushes to choose from.  Some have sonic vibration that is hard to imitate with regular brushes, some have small heads that help reach hidden areas of your mouth.  Consumers should look for toothbrushes that fit their needs. However, if a person uses a regular toothbrush correctly it can be just as effective as an electric one and less expensive.

Q.  How often one should brush and floss?

A. Proper brushing breaks down plaque. Take your time while brushing. Brush thoroughly twice a day after breakfast and before bedtime. Spend at least 2 minutes each time you brush.  Floss at least once before bedtime.    A quick brushing after each meal is recommended.
