Non surgical procedures that can be considered for periodontal disease Olathe
Periodontitis is a condition that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. This occurs when plaque and tartar builds around the tooth and is infected by bacteria. The initial stages of periodontitis are characterized by swelling and bleeding of the gums and are known as gingivitis. If left untreated, this develops into advanced periodontitis and can lead to the loss of teeth and even other health problems.
Determining treatment methods for the disease depend entirely to what extent the condition has developed. If recognized and treated in the early stages, it will require non surgical procedures which will include scaling, root planning and maintain of a good oral health care routine on a daily basis. If the condition has progressed to be advanced periodontitis, treatment methods would be more complex and will in some cases include the need for surgical procedures. However, even when the disease is most severe, non-surgical procedures of treatment are used prior to resolving to surgical procedures.
The most commonly used non-surgical procedures in the treatment of periodontitis in the initial stages are:
Root planning and scaling – in this treatment the root surfaces are cleaned so that the plaque and tartar can be removed from the spaces between the gum and the tooth. Next the root is smoothed out and the bacteria removed. Since this procedure involves working on the root of the tooth embedded in the gum, it can be a painful and time taking treatment. Yet, most often patients can avoid having to undergo surgery after this treatment. This is definitely a plus as surgery is far more painful and takes longer to recover from. New advancement in technology has made it possible to use lasers for scaling and root planning which has made the procedure far more precise and less time consuming and patients experience less pain in the recovery period.
Perioprotect – this is the latest alternative to surgical treatment for periodontal disease. Perioprotect involves placing a try with medication being placed in your mouth. The medicines in the tray attack the bacteria in the gums and kill it. Once the bacteria are eliminated the gums begin to heal. The dosage of medication is altered by the periodontist as the bacteria are lessened and the gums healing process progresses. Most patients are recommended to use perioprotect treatment even once the gums are completely healed, so that the condition does not re-occur. This procedure of treatment makes it possible to have gum disease treated domestically, several times a day. It is a simple process and if the condition is corrected through it, a patient will be able to avoid having to undergo surgery.
