An Interview with Dr. James Lowe on Breast Lifting.

Dr. James Lowe is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Breast Lifting.

Q.    What is Breast Lifting?

A.    Breast lift or mastopexy is an operation that primarily addresses excess skin of the breast related to age, weight loss, decreased cup size, or pregnancy. It is intended to enhance the shape and position of the breast.

Q.    How is breast lift surgery done?

A.    How a breast lift is performed depends on the amount of skin excess, size of the breast, and specific concerns and wishes of the patient.  Some patients elect to undergo breast augmentation to increase the size of the breast at the same time as the breast lift. A breast lift should never be a cookbook operation, but the goal is always to minimize the scar and maximize the cosmetic result and longevity.

Q.    What is the recovery period like?

A.    Most breast lift procedures can be performed as outpatient operations and recovery is typically 1-2 weeks.  Full healing and scar maturation may take up to 8-10 months.

Q.    Who is an ideal candidate for breast lift surgery?

A.    The ideal patient for a breast lift is one who has limited breast droopiness and who is content with their current breast size.

Q.    Are there risks and complications to a breast lift surgery?

A.    The risks associated with breast lifts depend on the severity of the deformity but include loss of nipple, loss of nipple sensation, sensitivity of nipple, inability to breast feed, and scarring.

Q.    How long do the results last?

A.    The results are long lasting in most cases.

Q.    How much does breast lift surgery cost?

A.    The total cost of a breast lift depends on time and complexity of the procedure performed, but it ranges between $3,500-7,500 in the Midwest.  It is best for patients to arrange a consultation with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to determine if they are good candidates for the surgery, the type of breast lift recommended, and the estimated cost of the procedure.  Patients should consider obtaining two professional opinions with surgical quotes before proceeding with any elective cosmetic surgery.
