An Interview with Dr. Jim Ellis on Dental Sealants.

Dr. Jim Ellis is a dentist who has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Sealants.

Q. What are dental sealants?

A. The same filling material that is used in fillings is flowed into the grooves of adult molar teeth as they erupt into the mouth.

Q. How do dental sealants work?

A. With the grooves of the molars filled,  the surface of the tooth gives a more flatter feeling than the deep grooved feeling it had before.  This flatter tooth anatomy allows the child to more easily clean the tooth as food has less ability to stick to the tooth surface.

Q. Which teeth are suitable for sealants?

A. Typically a dentist would seal the molars 1st and 2nd molars of a child. These molars come in at around 6 yrs of age and 12 years of age.

Q.  Are sealants visible?

No

Q. Will sealants make teeth feel different?

A. Only slightly different to the tongue but not to the bite.

Q. How long will sealants last?

A. Really depends on the diet of the patient.  If a child is a huge fan of peanuts and other hard foods then I would give a good sealant about 2 years. If their diet consists of only yogurt I would say 12 years.
As most people are somewhere in between I would say a good sealant should last about 7 years, give or take.

Q. How to contact Dr. Ellis if we have further questions?

A. My website has all of my contact information. Phone, e-mail, fax, directions to my office, etc.
