An Interview with Dr. Farshad Athari and Dr. Richard J. Darsky, Jr. on Dental Implants
Dr. Farshad Athari and Dr. Richard J. Darsky, Jr. are Dentists and have answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.
Q. What are dental implants?
A. One of the greatest advances in modern dentistry is the dental implant. Dental implants are substitutes for the roots of missing teeth. They act as an anchor for a replacement tooth or crown or a set of replacement teeth. They are artificial teeth that are an alternative to dentures or dental bridges. They are a more permanent solution and have many benefits that far exceed the advantages of dentures or bridges.
Q. What are the benefits of dental implants?
A. The benefits of dental implants can be summed up in the following three categories:
1. Appearance - The implants look and act more like your natural teeth as compared to loose fitting dentures and ill-fitting bridgework.
2. Increased confidence and self-esteem.
3. Reliability - Success rates for dental implants are very high and the longevity of an implant restoration can be a lifetime. Of course good oral health, healthy gum tissue and good bone structure help increase the effectiveness.
Q. How long does an implant last?
A. Most studies of implants are entering their 4th and 5th decades, meaning your implants can and will last for many years. Please visit our website at www.drathari.comto view actual cases of implants done in our office. Remember, just like your teeth if you do not have good oral hygiene, are a smoker or have other systemic diseases, implants can fail just as easily as losing your original teeth.
Q. What are implants made of?
A. Implants are made of surgical titanium, completely compatible in the human body, and rarely if ever have any negative interactions as would be found with organ transplants.
Q. Who is a candidate for implants?
A. If you’re interested in replacing your missing teeth, or a single missing tooth, dental implants may be an option for you. Not everybody, however, is a good candidate for implants. A good candidate should have the following:
1. Good health
2. Healthy gums
3. Enough bone to anchor the implants in the jaw — some people who have lost bone in their jaw still can get implants, but first the bone must be rebuilt using special procedures.
4. Be committed to taking very good care of the implanted teeth and surrounding gums — Daily brushing and flossing are essential. Regular visits to the dentist for follow-up are also important.
Q. How are dental implants placed? And how long does it take?
A. Dental implants are usually completed in two phases and usually take 1-2 hours per implant.
Phase #1 is the actual implant placement, a process generally performed in the office with local anesthesia or light sedation to help make the patient more comfortable. Using precise, gentle surgical techniques, the implants are placed into the jawbone and allowed to heal for 3 to 6 months while osseointegration (bonding to bone) takes place. This helps ensure a strong, solid foundation for replacement teeth. During this time, temporary bridges or dentures may be used to minimize any cosmetic or chewing inconvenience.
Phase #2 involves creating and attaching the new tooth or teeth to the anchored implant(s) in your jaw. Dental implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth or complete dentures.
