School’s out; the kids are bored…now what can they do? ~ Lynelle Holmes

School has been out now for a number of weeks. The kids are beginning to get antsy. They are crying that they are bored! Well, there are a number of activities children can participate in that are fun and educational.

In the tri-county area, there are many museums and historical sites parents can take the kids to see. Some of these places are Magnolia Plantation, Middleton Place, and Drayton Hall Plantation on Ashley River Road. There is also Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant. The South Carolina Aquarium on Charleston Harbor is also a great place to go.

Then there are some more accessible places that we many times fail to remember—the library and local schools. Check with your local libraries for a listing of programs offered during the summer months. The programs vary for kids from pre-k to high school. Many schools also have summer programs for students. If nothing else, they may have summer library hours where the kids can go and use the library and all that is available.

Another option that is more individual specific is tutoring. If your child struggled in a specific area, find a tutor specializing in that area for your child to revisit skills learned over the last year.

If nothing else is done, allow your child to read, read, read! Research has shown that allowing students to read material they are interested in (as long as it is appropriate) will enhance their reading and writing skills.

There are other options including crafts, movies (have the kids make their own movie as well), outside games and sports, and much more.

Remember, summer can be more than moping around the house complaining about there is nothing to do!
