An Interview with Dr. Wilma F. Antonio on Wisdom Tooth Extractions
Dr. Wilma F. Antonio is a dentist and has answered some common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Wisdom Tooth Extractions.
Q. How do I know if I have wisdom teeth?
A. X-rays are taken periodically to see if wisdom teeth are present and where they are aligned
Q. How Are wisdom teeth removed? And are all wisdom teeth problematic?
A. If wisdom teeth are fully erupted they can be extracted quite easily. If they are positioned underneath the gums and embedded in the jawbone or entrapped within soft tissue it requires an incision into the gum and then removal of the portion of bone or soft tissue or both that lies over the tooth. A tooth in this situation sometimes requires that the tooth be extracted in small sections. This minimizes the amount of bone that needs to be removed to get the tooth out.
Q. If my wisdom teeth need to be removed, who will do it?
A. If the tooth is not impacted or partially impacted, I generally do the extraction. If it is fully impacted, I recommend that the patient see an oral surgeon.
Q. What do I have to do to prepare for surgery?
A. As far as preparation is concerned, I advise my patients to have a meal beforehand as afterwards it is hard to eat right away. If other medication, aside from nitrous oxide is used during the procedure, I advise my patients to have someone drive them home. Also, if a person is taking aspirin, I recommend to stop the medication for at least 48(forty eight) hours before doing the procdure as well . If they have other medical isssues like history of delayed healing, diabetes, hypertension, heart issues, It"s very important for them so see their physician first to get them what we called medicall clearance so complications can be avoided. Also, if they have to take an antibiotic beforehand, they need to take that usually one hour before procedure.
Q. How much does it cost?
A. The cost varies as it depends on how complex the case is. In my office a simple extraction cost between $650 - $850 per tooth.
Q. How long will it take?
A. An extraction generally takes from beginning to end about 1 hour.
