Surgical treatments used to treat periodontal diseases New Orleans

Periodontal disease is a condition in which inflammation occurs around the teeth due to a bacterial infection. The main cause of this disease is due to formation of plaque and tartar on the surface of the teeth. The inflammation occurs due to the severity of the disease and is not evident until the disease has progressed to an advanced stage. Bulging gum is a common symptom and other obvious symptoms are:

Persistent bad breath
Swollen gums
Gum bleeding
Sores and pain in the mouth
Bleeding, while brushing and eating hard food
Loose teeth
Pus observed between the gum and tooth

Poor oral hygiene forms a colorless, sticky film (plaque) on the teeth. In the absence of regular brushing and flossing, this film hardens over a period of time to form a tartar which contains bacteria. Once the tartar is formed it is not possible to remove with normal brushing and will require professional help. If timely treatment is not given, the disease will aggravate and result in loss of teeth. As far as possible, the dentists will recommend non-surgical treatment to control the infection by using a scaling and root planning procedure. This procedure will remove the tartar on the teeth. The types of treatment will vary, depending on the extent of the gum disease. If detected at an early stage, the disease can be controlled with simple procedures. However, if the disease is at an advanced stage there will be no choice but to resort to surgical treatment to prevent loss of teeth.

There is a variety of surgical treatment that is used for periodontal diseases. When it is not possible to remove the tartar by using the scaling and root planning method or if the disease has gone into the bone around the teeth, a surgical procedure will be required to eliminate the infection. If the pockets are enlarged the chances are greater for the bacteria to live and attack the bone and tissue.  It is known that when this surgery was performed in the past, it resulted in longer teeth, however, with new procedures and techniques that are presently used; the surgery is more effective and is also esthetic. This minor surgery will eliminate the infection and usually, with bone grafting techniques the lost bone can be regenerated.

Some of the treatment used for periodontal diseases is as follows:

1.      Bone Surgery to rebuild or reshape the bone which has been affected due to periodontal disease.
2.      Splints & bite guards may be required to strengthen the loose teeth and for the tissues to heal.
3.      It may be necessary to perform a soft tissue graft if excessive gum tissue has been lost. To perform this procedure, gum tissue is taken from the palate to cover the exposed root.

Brush and floss your teeth and schedule regular dental visits to prevent loosing your teeth to periodontal disease.
