| Why does my child need dental xrays ? New Orleans |
Why does my child need dental xrays ?
Radiograph which is also known as X-rays is a necessity for your child’s dental diagnosis. Without x-rays, it will not be possible to detect the exact dental condition of a child. Pediatric dentists are however careful to expose patients to x-rays. With precautions and safeguards that are now available, the quantum of radiation in a dental x-ray is extremely small resulting in the exposure of risk to be negligible. It can be compared to the risk exposed during an untreated or undetected dental problem. Up to date x-ray equipment is able to filter out unnecessary x-rays thereby restricting the x-ray beam to the particular area. Appropriate shielding and digital film assures that a child receives a minimal amount of radiation.
X-rays are able to detect much more than what is visible to a naked eye, even under a microscopic lens which are detailed below.
1. It is able to survey erupting teeth.
2. Diagnose bone diseases.
3. Evaluate the results of an injury.
4. Plan orthodontic treatment.
5. X-rays allows dentists to diagnose and treat health conditions that are not diagnosed during an examination.
6. Find out how many teeth are yet to emerge.
7. To determine the size and the position of the un-erupted teeth.
8. Monitor injuries of the mouth and the teeth.
9. To check whether the teeth or mouth is infected.
10.To evaluate the need for braces and other orthodontic treatment.
11.To identify any other problem that is not visible.
Each child is unique and therefore, the need for dental x-rays will vary according to the development of teeth of each child. If your child require restoration or has cavities which are at high risk of tooth decay, it will be necessary for an x-ray to be carried out. It will also be necessary to carry out periodic x-rays thereafter, as recommended by the pediatric dentist, until the problem is resolved. If x-rays are not taken when it is required, it will not be possible for the pediatric dentist to address the problem effectively and the condition of the teeth will worsen. A pediatric dentist will not request x-rays to be done at random. They will review the dental and medical histories of the child and carry out a clinical examination prior to determining the need for an x-ray. It is common for children to need more x-rays than adults because their teeth grow and change rapidly. They are also more at risk to tooth decay than adults. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that x-rays be carried out every six months to be able to detect cavities that may develop between teeth.
Early detection of dental problems is able to prevent your teeth and the rest of the body from possible health related issues. |
