Dr. Franz Weyandt is a Dentist and and has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.
Q. What are porcelain veneers?
A. Porcelain Veneers are thin porcelain facings that fit on the front of a tooth, usually to change the size, color or general appearance of the tooth. Think of a contact lens and the way it fits your eye. They are bonded onto your tooth and become very strong, and incredibly esthetic!
Q. How long do porcelain veneers last?
A. One could expect a typical veneer to last 10-15 years but that can vary based on individual patient circumstances and habits. For instance, they are a little more risky in someone who may grind their teeth.
Q. Do porcelain veneers require special care?
A. Porcelain veneers don’t really require much more care than any of your other teeth. They should be checked at your regular checkups with the rest of your teeth and gums, and you should generally avoid things like biting your nails, pen caps or chewing ice cubes, but that goes for natural teeth as well.
Q. Does a veneer protect the tooth from decay?
A. When bonded properly, porcelain veneers don’t typically decay anymore than natural teeth would. The back of the tooth remains natural and it is possible to have decay around a veneer. That is why they should be checked regularly with the other natural teeth.
