| Dr. Jenifer Webb is an Optometrist and has answered some common questions that Bzymoms visitors have about Amblyopia.
Q. When should my child have his or her first eye exam?
A. The first eye exam is recommended at 6 months old. This early eye exam is used to look for ocular health, eye alignment, and refractive error.
Q. How frequently should children’s eyes be examined after their initial exam?
A. Usually children’s eyes should be examined once every 1-2 years, depending on the results of the initial exam.
Q. What is amblyopia?
A. Amblyopia is a condition that occurs when the nerve pathway from one eye to the brain fails to develop. This happens because one eye sends a blurry or conflicting image to the brain. The brain then pays more attention to the eye that has the clearest image, and ignores the blurry eye.
Q. Who is likely to develop amblyopia?
A. Amblyopia can develop in children who have sensory deprivation of one eye. That is a fancy way of saying that one eye sees well than the other eye. This can be caused by the two eyes having different prescriptions, one eye that turns in or out, or something that affects the quality of what the child sees, like a cataract. We recommend an eye exam within the first 6 - 9 months to catch any of these problems before they cause amblyopia.
Q. What causes amblyopia?
A. There are many causes of amblyopia. These can include a difference in prescription between the two eyes, an eye that turns in or out, or even childhood cataracts.
Q. How does amblyopia affect vision?
A. Amblyopia normally affects the vision in one eye only, limiting the best possible vision in that eye, even if you wear glasses or contact lenses. It can affect depth perception or the ability to view 3D movies.
Q. What are the signs/symptoms of amblyopia?
A. Since one eye has "normal" vision, there are few signs or symptoms of amblyopia, and many times amblyopia can go undetected until a child’s first eye exam or vision screening
