An Interview with Dr. Harry Karna on Root Canal.

Dr. Harry Karna is a Dentist who has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Root Canal Treatment.

Q.    What is root canal treatment and what does treatment involve?

A.    A root canal treatment is the treatment of the canal or pulp chamber that lies in the middle of the tooth and its root. Root canal therapy is accomplished by using local anesthetic injection to numb the tooth involved. Then access is gained to the pulp chamber (canal) in the middle of your tooth by drilling some small holes in the top of the tooth. Small instruments are used to remove the blood and nerve supply inside the tooth. Delicate files are then used to smooth and shape the canal to make sure no tissue remains that could later become infected. The canal will be sterilized with medications and the canal is   completely filled with an inert material to prevent bacteria and fluids from getting inside the tooth.

Q.    What are the signs of needing endodontic treatment?

A.    Signs of needing a root canal are extreme sensitivity to sweets, sour, hot and cold temperature. Continuous acute throbbing pain with or without biting.

Q.    Are pain pills and antibiotics an acceptable substitute for root canal?

A.    Pain pills and antibiotics are not a substitute for root canal. They may be taken for temporary relief of pain and infection only and should only be taken if prescribed by a doctor or dentist.

Q.    Are there alternative treatments for root canal?

A.    The alternative for a root canal is an extraction (removal) of the tooth.

Q.    How much will the procedure cost?

A.    The procedure of a root canal treatment varies in the size of the tooth and amount of canals the tooth has, It can range from $600.00 to $1,400.00 .

Q.    Will the tooth needs any special care or additional treatment?

A.    Yes, once a root canal treatment has been completed it will need additional treatment, a post and core build up will be needed in order to prevent the tooth from breaking at the gum line and a crown will be needed to protect the tooth, as once a root canal is completed it tends to be more brittle.
