An Interview with Dr. Derek Budman on Root Canal
Dr. Derek Budman is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Root Canal.
Q. What is root canal treatment?
A. Root canal treatment is a procedure which removes the sensation of pain from a tooth by removing its nerve. Although this procedure normally conjures up thoughts of pain, the reality is that a root canal should be a very comfortable procedure.
Q. What does treatment involve?
A. Root canal treatment involves numbing the tooth which requires treatment, placing a rubber dam barrier over the tooth(to prevent contamination of the tooth from saliva), and cleaning/disinfecting the tooth from the inside. Once all of the nerve is removed and the roots are clean, the roots of the tooth are sealed with a filling material coated in cement. Once this procedure has been completed, it is critical that a permanent restoration be placed on the tooth so the tooth does not fracture.
Q. What are the signs of needing endodontic treatment?
A. Signs that a root canal may be necessary include unprovoked, spontaneous toothaches that wake you up at night and extreme sensitivity to hot and/or cold. If a swelling is present on the gums or tenderness is felt when biting, these could also be signs of an infection which would require a root canal.
Q. Are pain pills and antibiotics an acceptable substitute for root canal?
A. Never
Q. Are there alternative treatments for root canal?
A. There is nothing better than a natural tooth. Therefore, if your tooth can be saved with a root canal, that is the best option. If, however, a tooth cannot be saved, it can be extracted and replaced with something permanent like an implant or bridge. A less desirable replacement option is with something removable, such as a partial denture.
Q. How much will the procedure cost?
A. Root canals and subsequent permanent restorations are not cheap. However, insurance plans help to defray the costs, usually by at least 50%. Each insurance plan is different and an individual quote would have to be given based on each plan’s coverage. For anyone without insurance, a third party financing company could be used to make payments at a low interest rate or possibly interest-free.
Q. Will the tooth need any special care or additional treatment?
A. Some root canalled teeth are missing too much tooth structure to be properly restored. To solve this problem, sometimes a post must be cemented in place in order to securely help anchor a crown onto the tooth.
