An Interview with Dr. Tuuyen Do on Dental Implants

Dr. Tuuyen Do is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.

Q. What are dental implants? And what are the benefits of dental implants?

A. A dental implant is usually the best way to replace a missing tooth.  You can chew on it and floss around it, just like a natural tooth.  It has a very high success rate.  And once it’s integrated you never have pain or the possibility of a new cavity!

Q. How long does an implant last? And who is a candidate for implants?

A. Everyone is a candidate for implants!  Implants have come a long way in the past 20 years.   Although there are factors that contribute to the success rate of implants (diabetes, tobacco use, etc.) implants are worth exploring when you are missing a tooth or multiple teeth.  I work very closely with my implant surgeons to get the best outcome possible for my patients.

Q. What are implants made of? And how are dental implants placed?

A. An implant is a titanium post that is placed in your jaw by an implant surgeon.  It sounds scary, but this is actually one of the least painful dental procedures!  You will be completely numb during the procedure and the healing process is very similar to when you have tooth taken out.

This implant acts like a new root for your tooth.  After the implant is placed, the surgeon will cover it up and let it integrate into the bone for 4-6 months.  During this time, you won’t even know it’s there!  Once integrated, the implant is a part of your body and it will not budge!

Q. What are the alternatives to dental implants?

A. Other alternatives used to replace a missing tooth are bridges or partials.  A bridge usually is not ideal because the dentist needs to prepare the teeth around the missing tooth so that they can act as anchors for the fake tooth in the middle.  This means that all three teeth are connected and you can’t floss between them.  This is usually a recipe for disaster in the long run since patients usually get cavities on the anchor teeth due to poor oral hygiene and difficult access.  A partial is usually large and uncomfortable and not well tolerated.  So unless the patient is missing lots of teeth, they usually don’t even wear the partial.
