| Michigan is a state which is located in the Midwest of the country. It derives its name from the Lake Michigan, which is a French version of the Ojibwe term 'mishigama,' which translates to 'large lake' or 'large water'. Michigan has the 8th biggest population in the country. The state also has the notable distinction of having the 3rd highest number of recreational boats which are registered. There are 64,980 inland lakes in Michigan. Michigan is also the only state which consists solely of two peninsulas. In May 2009, the unemployment rate of Michigan went up to 14.1%, which is the highest in the whole country during the period of recession. The main industries in the state include cereal products, automobiles, aerospace, information technology, iron, copper, furniture and military equipment. Michigan has the 3rd most number of Christmas trees, with an estimated 60,520 acres dedicated to the growth of Christmas trees. Vernors, a popular beverage, was founded in Michigan in 1866. |
