An Interview with Dr. John D. Thomas on Porcelain Veneers

Dr. John D. Thomas is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.

Q. What are porcelain veneers?

A. A porcelain veneer is a thin restoration that is bonded or attached with a special material to the front surface of a tooth.  These are usually placed on the front teeth.  Veneers can be used to close spaces between the teeth,  provide a more even color or whiteness to the front teeth,  establish a better symmetry to the front teeth..  Usually only a minimal amount (1/2 mm) of tooth reduction is required.  Sometimes the edge or biting surface has to be reduced and covered as a result of the way the teeth bite together.

Q. How long to dental veneers last?

A. It is hard to place a "life expectancy" on a restoration because there are so many variables which effect how long one will last.  Although most insurance companies place a five year replacement time frame on veneers, most will last much longer if made correctly and cared for correctly.  We have many that are over 10 years old.

Q. Do dental veneers require special care?

A. The patient is cautioned not to bite small, fine objects (ie: pencils, safety pins, ect) . Small, concentrated forces may chip or crack the veneer.  Otherwise, the patient is instructed to brush, floss, and care for the veneer just as the care for their other teeth.  We also encourage routine cleaning visits in our office to keep the veneers in good shape.

Q. Are there alternatives to dental veneers?

A. Alternative options to veneers include crowns (which are also tooth colored ) but cover the entire surface of the tooth and composite bonding (a resin or plastic material is used on the teeth to lighten or shape them).

Q. Do Veneers look natural?

A. Veneers look very natural, especially when several adjacent teeth are all restored.

Q. Does the veneer protect one’s tooth from decay?

A. A veneer protects the area of the tooth it covers from decay.  However, the edges can be prone to decay.  That is why proper home care and periodic cleaning visits in our office are recommended.

Q. What does a veneer cost?

A. The cost of a veneer is similar to the cost of a crown and can vary slightly depending upon how many teeth are restored.  Our office does not charge for a consult visit.

Q. How to contact Dr. Thomas if we have further questions?

A. Please call our office at (901) 753-9005 if you have any questions or would like to schedule a consultation visit.  Please also visit our website:  johnthomasdds.com.
