An Interview with Dr. Karl E. Schneck on TMJ

Dr. Karl E. Schneck is a dentist and has answered some common questions bizymoms visitors have about TMJ.

Q. What is TMJ?

A. TMJ is an abbreviation for Temporo-Mandibular Joint. The TMJ connects the lower jaw to the skull. TMD is Temporo-Mandibular Disorder.

Q. How do I know if I have TMJ?

A. TMJ symptoms can include some or all of the following: tinnitus (ringing in the ears), dizziness, headaches, neck or shoulder pain, difficulty opening or closing the jaw, sensitive teeth, referred pain to remote areas, earaches, biting or chewing difficulty, and clicking, popping, or grating of the joint.

Q. Can pain killers help in treating TMJ syndrome?

A. Pain killers, anti-inflammatory, and muscle relaxants can be used to temporarily reduce symptoms of TMJ. Other treatments may include physical therapy, oral appliances, orthodontics, oral surgery, establishing a proper bite relationship between the upper and lower teeth, and biofeedback.

Q. Who should treat TMD?

A. TMD treatment usually should start with diagnosis by a dentist, who may then refer the patient to other specialties as required (physical therapist, oral surgeon, etc.).

Q. What should you expect from a TMD doctor?

A. While there is no specialty degree for treating TMJ patients, it is best to consult with a dentist that has a special interest and training in the diagnosis and treatment of TMJ patients.

Q. What results can I expect from surgery?

A. Surgery is usually reserved for the most difficult cases when more conservative treatments have not been successful.

Q. Is TMJ/TMD covered by insurance?

A. TMJ treatment usually is not covered by dental insurance but may be covered under medical insurance.

Q. How can we contact Dr. Schneck  if we have further questions?

A. Phone 541-779-4344 or e-mail at devyns@earthlink.net.
