An Interview with Dr. Jason K. Tam on Braces |
|
Dr. Jason K. Tam is an orthodontist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Braces.
Q. Can one be too old for braces?
A. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children be seen by an orthodontist at age 7. While treatment may not be required at this time, there are certain conditions that must be treated before all the permanent teeth have erupted.
No one is ever too old for braces. The health of the teeth and gums is the determining factor in whether an individual is a suitable candidate for orthodontic treatment. Braces have been traditionally thought of as for children and teens. However, with the new aesthetic options available, there are an increasing number of adults opting for treatment. Our practice is comprised of about 35% adult patients.
Q. How much does braces cost?
A. The cost of braces or Invisalign is directly related to the complexity of the treatment and time period involved Treatment fees vary, but for our full treatments which take about a year to two and a half years the cost ranges between $5000-$7000, and an average of about $6000. Our fees include all aspects of treatment performed in our office, including one set of retainers and retainer visits for one year after braces have been removed.
Q. When will one begin to see changes in his/her teeth after the braces are put on?
A. Many of our patients notice a difference within a few days. With the use of modern nickel-titanium wires and braces, teeth move quite quickly with less discomfort.
Q. Will one need to have teeth extracted for braces?
A. The need for extractions in braces can often be a controversial topic. While we avoid extractions whenever possible, in some situations, extractions may be the best way to proceed with treatment. Things to consider include the amount of bone support, crowding, as well as facial profile. There are situations where teeth can be straightened without removing teeth, but doing so would result in a compromised result.
Q. How long will it take to complete the treatment?
A. Treatment generally ranges between a year to two and a half years. This is going to depend on a variety of factors including the need for extractions, initial malocclusion, surgery, growth, as well as patient compliance.
Q. Can a person wear braces even though that person may have crowns and missing teeth?
A. Crowns and missing teeth do not preclude someone from wearing braces, and in fact, often times, braces are required to help redistribute space before the placement of restorations such as bridges, veneers, crowns, or implants.
Braces can be placed on crowns, but a special procedure must be performed during the braces placement process. Traditional bonding processes are between braces and enamel, so there is generally a weaker interface between a brace and a crown, leading to a greater chance of the brace falling off. Still, this is not an issue as the brace can be easily replaced.
Q. How can I prevent my child from being embarrassed by wearing braces?
A. There has been a changing trend in the last few years over the perception of braces. Children and teens used to dread braces, but many of them are now coming in asking for treatment. Teens understand that a great smile is becoming increasingly important in our society and can help them get ahead in school, their careers, and beyond.
For those who are still self-conscious about braces, there are a variety of aesthetic options including ceramic braces and Invisalign Teen that can make treatment less noticeable. Another factor to consider is allowing kids to have orthodontic treatment at the same time as their peers so that they are able to grow through their orthodontic experience together.
