An Interview featuring Dr. M. Keith Hanna as a hair transplant surgeon on Bizymoms Marietta

Dr. M. Keith Hanna is a member of International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Hair transplant.

Q. Do you provide free consultation?

Consultation fee is $75, but if the patient books surgery that fee will go towards the cost of the surgery.

Q. How long does a hair transplant procedure take?

The length of a hair transplantation procedure depends on the number of grafts being   transplanted.  The more follicles being transplanted the longer the case takes.

Q. Will hair transplants ever fall out?

Hair transplantation is permanent.  Basically, hair is taken from the back of the head which is genetically privileged, in that these follicles are resistant to the breakdown products of testosterone  which causes balding on the top of  the head.  Therefore when these follicles are transplanted they will grow in their new location permanently.

Q. Are the clients kept conscious during the procedure?

The procedure is typically done under straight local anesthesia. Therefore, the patients are awake for the procedure.  However, if we have a patient that is particularly anxious, we can give an oral valium or xanax.

Q. When will the newly transplanted hair start to grow?

The transplanted hair will start to grow in 3-4 months from the time of the surgery and then will grow at about 1 cm per month.

Q. When can the clients resume normal activities like washing the hair, going in the sun, etc.

A patient can wash his or her hair a few days after the procedure, but this has to be done gently by simply pouring soapy water over the head without actually rubbing the area with the transplanted follicles.  We also instruct our patients not to put their head under a shower as this may dislodge some follicles.  After 2 weeks they can start to gently wash the area with the hands.  As for sunlight, we encourage our patients to wear a hat when they are outside at least for the first 2 weeks.

Q.Are there any simple outpatient procedures available?

The hair transplantation is an outpatient procedure.  The only FDA approved non-surgical options for hair loss are Rogaine, Propecia, and the HairMax Lasercomb.
