An Interview with Dr. Richard E. Vachon on Dentures

Dr. Richard E. Vachon is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dentures.

Q. What are dentures?

A. Dentures are prosthetic devices, artificial teeth, and are advised when all teeth are removed.  We prefer to avoid this situation whenever possible.  Prevention of dental disease is incredibly important.  Dentures do serve specific needs but, natural teeth are much better to chew your food.  Caring for your teeth requires just a few minutes of time each day, brushing and flossing.  Avoidance of sodas and other high sugar content foods will help you to avoid cavities.  Developing these habits in early childhood will greatly reduce the chance of having to wear removable dentures.

Q. Why should I use a denture adhesive?

A. Denture adhesive is used to prevent movement of the device and should be used as directed on the product.  Too much can cause illness.

Q. What types of cosmetic dentures are possible?

A. With the use of different sized and shaped teeth, dentures can be made to look as close to a person’s natural teeth.  The shade can be altered to match a person’s remaining teeth or to change the shade to a desired color.  Partial dentures and bridge work are also possible when some teeth are present.  These are designed to attach to healthy teeth that remain.

Q. How long do cosmetic dentures take to make?

A. Dentures can be fabricated in as little as 3 – 4 appointments.  Depending upon the amount of lab time needed, it may take approximately 3-4 weeks.  Individual cases may vary.

Q. What are the alternatives to cosmetic dentures?

A. Dental implants are a very good alternative because they are stationary.  There’s no need to remove them at all!

Q. Are dentures uncomfortable or painful to wear?

A. Well, dentures are not your natural teeth so you need to be careful while eating and be sure to keep them clean.  Dentures can be uncomfortable when not properly taken care of.  It’s important to see your dentist if they become loose. They may need to be relined, to provide a better fit, due to wear and tear over time.  As a person ages bone loss is common, this may change the fit of your dentures requiring a reline to provide a tighter fit.  If you notice any changes in your mouth under your dentures see your dentist immediately.

Q. What’s the difference between conventional dentures and immediate dentures?

A. Immediate dentures are placed the same day that the remaining teeth are extracted.  The dentures are made ahead of time so they are ready in advance.  The fit is tight at first, but when the tissues heal, they may become loose and need to be refitted or a new set made.
