The term “organic” has become a buzz word of sorts lately. It has been used frequently in the fruit and vegetable industry, in cleaning products, and cosmetics. The fact that it is organic often means that it can be sold at a higher price thus raking in additional revenue for companies that sell them. This is also the case when it comes to organic natural makeup, but is it truly worth the additional cost? What do dermatologists have to say about this?

To be labeled as ‘organic,’ a product must have at least 70 per cent of organic material in its composition. Nevertheless, is it truly better? Most dermatologists believe that although a fundamental difference exists between the two, there isn’t a great divide between organic natural makeup and more conventional products. A classic example of this is mineral cosmetics. Even though the mineral makeup of organic cosmetics is often used as a sales gimmick, in essence, most of those same ingredients are used in its substitute, as well. This is especially evident in certain organic natural makeup products that contain artificial and synthetic additives such as perfume in its composition.

Most dermatologists note that the best products in the market are the ones that contain fewer artificial chemicals. They recommend these products to consumers because of the lack of chemicals. Consequently, they clog pores to a lesser degree. Moreover, they tend to be gentle on the skin and thus prove to be the prudent and natural choice for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin types when seeking treatment. Dermatologists argue that the role of the consumer shouldn’t be slighted as it is ultimately their responsibility to read the contents of the product before deciding to make a purchase.

Dermatologists also note an added concern when it comes to both conventional and organic and natural makeup products. This problem stems from the need for companies to differentiate themselves in the sea of cosmetic products on the shelves today. This has led to manufacturers seeking more exotic and rare ingredients that have not been widely used. Even though these may be considered organic, it raises significant health and safety concerns as their true effectiveness and/or potential harm could be unknown. Dermatologists also point out that consumers believe that any organic product is safe to use. This may not be the case in some instances, which again stresses the importance of consumer awareness.

In conclusion, dermatologists believe that even though organic natural makeup products are safer and more predictable, it still requires prudent judgment on behalf of the ultimate consumer.
